Planning a custom software project

Start with the workflow, the people, and the outcome before choosing the tools.

Made North editorial preview · 3 min read

Draft content for review before launch.

Start with the work

Write down what people do today, where they lose time, and what a successful change would look like. Include the exceptions: approvals, corrections, and missing information often determine how useful a system becomes.

Choose a small, useful first release

Group requirements into essential workflows and later improvements. A focused first release gives users something concrete to try and gives the team a clearer basis for decisions.

Plan for life after launch

Agree who owns support, documentation, access, backups, and future changes. Maintainability belongs in the initial plan, alongside the features.
